After being enthralled by "Freedom at Midnight" by Collins and Lapierre, about Indian independence and partition in 1947-48, I was given this smaller book by a friend who thought I might enjoy it.I enjoyed "My Life and Times" immensely. It is relatively short at under 300 pages, but packed with adventurous chapters in Pakistan, India, Africa, the U.S., and Europe, threaded together by the earnest efforts of a tireless man dedicated to his family, work, and doing right for his country and all people he came in contact with (e.g., activists in the Mau Mau movement in Africa in the Fifties).
Gurbachan Singh Bhasin (4/15/1920) has written an amazing foreign-service-focused autobiography -- chronicling his family's Sikh roots to his boyhood in the District Rawalpindi (Pakistan post-partition) to his first government job for the Director of Defense Audit Services in New Delhi through a harrowing, grueling escape as a Sikh, with his wife and infant child, from Sikh-hostile Pakistan in 1947, through a series of labyrinthine challenges and well-earned professional placements and promotions, including: supporting the establishment and early successes of India's Ministry of External Affairs, being assigned overseas to Nairobi, Kenya, then to Salisbury (now Harare, Zimbabwe), then capital of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (now Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi), then to Kathmandu, Nepal, to New Delhi, and ultimately to New York, where he became India's de facto representative on the important Fifth Committee of the United Nations in New York in the mid-Sixties. According to the author, that committee controlled the entire administration and UN budget. This led to many interesting exchanges for Bhasin with other nations' U.N. representatives. Following his and his family's time in New York, Mr. Bhasin and his wife returned to India and, through his ongoing service, then to Kabul, Afghanistan (during which time Bhasin's team hosted the President V.V. Giri of India and later witnessed the overthrow of the last king of Afghanistan) and to his final postin at Brussels.
Bhasin distinguished himself and gained the trust of leaders through his earnestness and dedication to his assignments. It seems that he worked with many impressive people in India's Foreign Service through turbulent times, including in Kenya: Apa B. Pant, M.A. Rahman, Jomo Kenyatta's Indian defense team of lawyers; in Rhodesia: Nirmaljeet Singh, a visit from Vice President Dr. S. Radha Krishna ; in Nepal: Ambassador Hareshwar Dayal, visiting poet/scholar Dr. Shivmangal Singh Suman, O.D. Vohra; and at the United Nations in New York: S.K. Singh and Alfred Gonsalves and a highly capable team of diplomats and delegates.
Fascinating read!

A simple and easy to read story of a great sikh Indian Foreign Services man from days well before partition between India and Pakistan till his retirement 30 plus years ago.
