Shattered Promises edition by Jessica Sorensen Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

Couldn't find a redeemable character. The heroine is woefully in the dark, but continues to allow herself to be manhandled by everyone - not one for any kind of self-advocation. The main male character is psychotic and untrustworthy. Can't imagine any kind of reasoning for this unless it's all going to be about some spell that somehow makes him act like a typical wife-beater-type. The moment the heroine shows a moment of backbone, he will literally hold her down, but not in a hot-BDSM kind of way, or block her way, or shove her into another dimension where she is abused some more. Or break her virginity and then say she's frustrating him. Hmm...There's enough violence against women in real life and in literature- hard to stomach it in a fantasy story that shows no hope of redemption, unless she's going to snap in future stories and put all these abusers in a dark cell. That would be fun to read. Somehow, I'm sure she's going to fall in love with her abuser as he had a rough childhood and all will be forgiven as we ladies are conditioned to do.
Instant gratification this is not! I wasn’t sure if it was possible for me as a reader to be this frustrated, aggravated, pent up and flabbergasted all at the same time. Mission accomplished by this writer in generating all of those feelings simultaneously with this first offering in her Shattered Promises Series. I get tension, I love build up, but after a while it just became old. Unlike other reviews, I did like her character development and came to care about her two main ones, Alex and Gemma. Young men handle new emotions differently and don’t like being cornered, especially while conflicted, and her portrayal of Alex was spot on in my opinion. The dude has secrets and issues. She paints Gemma as a mature young lady who just had her world turned upside down, but handles it with grace and a calmness which was a relief.
Now, let’s get back to why this book was literally yelled at and periodically thrown across the room shall we? The sexual buildup between the two primary characters was enough to overheat my e-reader, but then the writer takes it away like she’s snatching the most delicious ice-cream cone right out of your hands because she wants it for herself. The hot and cold between the two main characters adds to the buildup, but again, it takes too damn long.
There was also the lack of credibility factor. Not necessarily because of the world the writer paints, but in how she resolves the main character escaping almost uncertain death. I came to the point where while I was reading those scenes, I would roll my eyes and tell myself that Gemma is about to wake up any minute, yet again, and all will be well and she and Alex can go back to their sexual pent up aggression towards each other.
This book for me was a struggle to get through, not because it’s not my favorite genre to read or hoping it was the next Twilight, but the angst and delay had me agitated. I nearly bailed and didn’t finish it; however, the story was good enough that I stuck with it. I never take this long to read a story, but it just didn’t become a priority for me. It was one I could put down and walk away from and do other things and then hope it will be over with soon. In addition, due to the long and drawn out angst between the two main characters, I made the decision not to put myself through this torture any longer and will not be continuing on in the series.
If the writer were to clean up the language, ease back a bit on the sexual aggressiveness, this would be the perfect book for the new adult genre and despite my negative feedback, would make for an interesting series on cable.
I will say this much, this was much better than the youth novel this was taken from. Less high school drama and more about the plot. With the 17+ warning, I thought the sexy parts were going to be plentiful and in detail…No, that didn’t happen. If you want that, go read Christine Feehan, Christine Warren and some other authors that I’ve reviewed on here.

Aside from that, while I did finish this book and liked it better than the youth novel it was derived from, I still wasn’t all that impressed. If anything, I was…overwhelmed is the word that comes to mind. It just felt like the author was trying to put a little too much into the story. Maybe trying to make up for how slow the youth novel was?

It was alright, even a little bit good until the halfway mark, somewhere around there. Then it started to get a little out of control and feel like it was starting to go all over the place. That’s also around the time I started taking notes again, which is when I get out my phone and put down the things that really bother me. Let’s get to those now shall we?

Notes This girl apparently puts her hair into bun but then, a few sentences later, flips her hair off of her shoulder? I don’t know what buns are to other people but to me, a bun means the hair is already up off the shoulders.

Gemma’s side is being stitched up, no anesthetic or pain killers of any kind, yet she’s talking normally? That’s almost like the tattoo remark in the youth book, being stitched up I’m sure is pretty painful.

Whenever Gemma starts freaking out, Alex pins her down. Gets on top of her and pins her down. Now, I don’t know about anyone else but, that makes me freak out even more. You don’t trap people who are freaking out.

Back to the stitch thing, she just got them and she’s already flopping around like normal. Wouldn’t it hurt? Wouldn’t they rip or something?

The sentences were just choppy and there were some that just seemed unnecessary.

Now, I know there the saying that there are no such things as stupid questions but come on Gemma, you should know these things. It’s common sense when you have the information.

Tightens a dress so tight she can’t breathe. Now normally, I wouldn’t comment on that but, again, she just got stitches. I don’t think any of this is good for the stitches.

Alex has already said that he’s broken so many rules by getting close to her but then backtracks and says that he doesn’t break the rules. No, you sir, are a rule breaker.

Gemma does something to her wrist that made a loud pop and apparently hurt but then she shook it to pop it back into place…that sounds like it was dislocated. Is it that easy to fix something dislocated?

Nicholas just winks way too much and it annoys me. I feel like something is wrong with his eye.

Again with the pinning her down, this time to make her listen. Stop it!

That’s it for my notes, as you can see, I had quite a few.

Maybe if the author just stuck to one or two things instead of bringing in a bunch of other elements it would have been better but I just felt like it was getting a little out of control.

The connections that the characters had just felt forced and I just got annoyed with them.

I give this a better recommendation than the youth novel but, I wouldn’t hold my breath hoping for a great novel.
